The Rialto Bridge is the oldest bridge crossing the Grand Canal in Venice. It is one of the most famous bridges in the world. The stone Rialto bridge replaced a previous wooden structure which was built around 1250. The wooden stucture had lasted from 1250 to 1524. The architect Antonio da Ponte won the priviledge of having his design built despite some fierce competion. It was completed in 1591. There are 2 ramps which lead up to the central portico and 2 ramps on either side which carry shops selling, now, mainly tourist goods and items typical of the region.
